Toyota has officially entered Kenya’s rapidly expanding electric vehicle market, launching the bZ4X, its first fully electric SUV built for the African continent. The vehicle was unveiled on June 17 by CFAO Mobility Kenya at the CFAO Mobility Toyota Showroom along Nairobi’s Uhuru Highway, marking a significant milestone for the Japanese automaker after six decades of selling petrol and diesel vehicles in the country.
The launch positions Toyota strategically within Kenya’s booming e-mobility sector, where electric vehicle registrations have surpassed 35,000 units and continue to accelerate as consumers and policymakers increasingly embrace zero-emission transportation.

The bZ4X, short for Beyond Zero and 4-Wheel Crossover, represents Toyota’s bold commitment to sustainable mobility while maintaining the brand’s reputation for quality, durability and reliability. According to CFAO Mobility Kenya Managing Director Arvinder Reel, the bZ4X establishes a new benchmark for the modern electric vehicle, delivering cutting-edge electric performance without sacrificing the engineering excellence Toyota customers expect.
The vehicle is built on Toyota’s dedicated e-TNGA electric platform, an architecture designed specifically for battery-powered vehicles that combines a low center of gravity with high body rigidity for superior stability and handling across Kenya’s diverse road conditions.
Performance and efficiency are core strengths of the bZ4X. The electric SUV delivers an impressive driving range of up to 516 kilometers on a single charge, making it practical for both daily urban commuting and longer intercity trips.
Acceleration from zero to 100 kilometers per hour takes just 5.1 seconds, delivering responsive power delivery that rivals traditional petrol SUVs without engine noise or vibration.
The charging system supports 150-kilowatt DC fast charging, allowing drivers to charge the battery from 10 percent to 80 percent capacity in approximately 30 minutes, addressing one of the most common concerns among potential EV buyers transitioning from conventional vehicles.
The bZ4X is engineered specifically for Kenyan terrain. It features ground clearance between 206 and 212 millimeters and can wade through water up to 500 millimeters deep, making it equally competent on paved urban roads and rougher rural routes.
The all-wheel-drive system is paired with Toyota’s X-MODE Grip Control technology, which optimizes traction on slippery or loose surfaces, a particularly valuable feature across Kenya’s varied geography. Inside, the cabin emphasizes comfort and practicality with what Toyota calls the Family Lounge concept, prioritizing passenger comfort across all seating positions rather than just the front seats.
Safety is paramount. The bZ4X comes equipped with Toyota Safety Sense, the latest generation of safety technology including pre-collision warning systems, lane trace assist to maintain proper lane positioning, and safe exit assist that alerts passengers to oncoming traffic or cyclists before opening doors. Toyota backs the vehicle’s battery with an eight-year or 120,000-kilometer warranty, demonstrating confidence in the vehicle’s long-term reliability and durability.
CFAO Mobility Kenya will provide comprehensive after-sales support through its nationwide network of 43 branches and service centers, where technicians are trained in electric vehicle maintenance and diagnostics. The bZ4X retails at KES 11 million inclusive of value-added tax, positioning it within Kenya’s premium vehicle segment at a time when government policies continue supporting EV adoption through reduced excise taxes and growing charging infrastructure investment.
