Meta and FG Unveil AI Academy Nigeria With $5,000 Startup Prizes

Meta has partnered with the Federal Government of Nigeria to launch AI Academy Nigeria. The new initiative aims to build the country’s artificial intelligence talent pipeline. It also offers cash prizes to promising startups.

The programme brings together several key players. These include Meta, the Federal Ministry of Communications, Innovation and Digital Economy (FMCIDE), the 3 Million Technical Talent (3MTT) initiative, the National Centre for Artificial Intelligence and Robotics (NCAIR), and Robotics and Artificial Intelligence Nigeria (RAIN). Together, these partners say the academy will give Nigerian developers, startups, students and early career professionals access to practical AI training. It will also provide technical support and funding opportunities.

AI Academy Nigeria runs on three tracks. These are AI Skills Development, a Startup Pitchathon and a Developer Bootcamp.

The AI Skills Development track targets members of the 3MTT community. It offers free courses covering generative AI fundamentals. Participants also learn how to build applications using Meta’s AI models. The courses run through Coursera, DeepLearning.AI and DataCamp. They include titles such as Building Generative AI Apps with Llama and Prompt Engineering with Llama 2 and 3. So, the top 100 performers on this track will qualify for scholarships. These cover paid Meta Blueprint certifications and up to $5,000 in advertising credits.

The Startup Pitchathon targets a different group. It focuses on early stage Nigerian startups already using Meta’s AI technologies to solve real world problems. Applications for this track close on August 21. After that, 10 startups will be shortlisted to pitch live at GITEX Nigeria on September 3. Two winning startups will each walk away with $5,000 in cash funding. They will also receive $2,000 in Meta advertising credits. In addition, they get a fully funded trip to Istanbul, Turkiye, to pitch at Meta’s AI Summit on November 23 and 24.

The third track is the Developer Bootcamp. This is a six week intensive programme run by RAIN for a selected group of participants. It focuses on hands on AI development and technical mentorship. Participants also gain access to Meta’s network of AI experts. As a result, the goal is to help developers build functional, market ready AI products.

Dr Bosun Tijani, Minister of Communications, Innovation and Digital Economy, spoke on the partnership. He said it would equip developers, entrepreneurs and young professionals with practical AI skills. Furthermore, he noted it opens pathways for Nigerian startups to compete on a global stage.

Sade Dada, Head of Public Policy for Anglophone West Africa at Meta, also commented. She said Nigeria is home to some of the continent’s most dynamic AI talent. However, she noted that founders and developers still need more access to practical training, funding and platforms. This access, she added, helps them turn ideas into impactful solutions.

Dr Olushola Ayoola, founder and CEO of RAIN, shared his thoughts too. He said growing Nigeria’s AI capacity requires a coordinated push. This push must span government, industry and training partners. He described RAIN as proud to work alongside Meta, FMCIDE and 3MTT on the initiative.

The launch builds on 3MTT’s broader mandate. That mandate is to develop Nigeria’s technical talent base. At the same time, it links skills training directly to entrepreneurship and digital economy opportunities. Applications for the Startup Pitchathon track remain open until August 21.
