OPay has debunked rumours that it is closing down in Nigeria. The fintech company confirmed that over 7,000 staff members are still working across the country. Notably, the company made this clarification during a live town hall meeting in Lagos on Wednesday.
The clarification follows days of panic on social media. A viral message claimed that OPay would go on an indefinite break from September 1, 2026. The fake post also urged customers to withdraw their funds immediately. As a result, many users rushed to pull money from their accounts before checking if the claim was true.

Dotun Adekunle, OPay’s Chief Operating Officer and Chief Technology Officer, addressed the rumour directly. He said the message did not come from OPay. In fact, he confirmed that the company has stayed fully operational throughout the panic.
Adekunle also reassured customers that all services remain active. Users can still transfer money, pay bills, and use other OPay features without any issues. Similarly, merchants can keep receiving payments as usual. He further confirmed that OPay’s physical offices remain open across the country.
Beyond calming customers, OPay is now taking legal action. Akinfolabi Moses Rokosu, the company’s Chief Legal Counsel, said OPay is working with regulators and law enforcement. He confirmed that the Nigeria Police Force and other agencies are investigating the matter. The company is fully cooperating with these investigations.
This town hall followed earlier reports that OPay sent legal notices to three social media users. These users allegedly spread the shutdown claims and told customers to withdraw their funds. So, OPay is pursuing legal action against them for spreading false information.
OPay also urged the public to stay alert. Customers should never share sensitive details like PINs, passwords, or OTPs with anyone claiming to represent the brand. Instead, they should rely only on OPay’s official channels for updates.
This is not the first time OPay has faced shutdown rumours. Similar claims spread in November 2025 and again in March 2026. Each time, the company confirmed that its operations, offices, and customer accounts remained safe.
For now, OPay insists it has no plans to suspend its services. The company continues to urge Nigerians to ignore the viral post and trust only verified sources.
