Tesla is recalling 20,349 Model 3 and Model Y vehicles in the United States after regulators found that their low-beam headlights can exceed federal brightness limits.
The recall involves certain Model 3 vehicles from model years 2017–2023 and Model Y vehicles from 2020–2023. According to U.S. regulators, some of the affected headlights produced light intensity above the maximum permitted under Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard No. 108.
The concern is that excessively bright low-beam headlights can create glare for oncoming drivers, potentially reducing visibility and increasing the risk of a crash, particularly at night.
The issue has been under regulatory review for several years. Tesla previously argued that the lighting problem was not significant enough to require a formal recall, but regulators rejected that position.
Tesla will now work to address the affected vehicles through its recall process. Owners of the recalled vehicles are expected to receive instructions on the required remedy.
The latest recall adds to a growing list of safety and regulatory concerns involving Tesla vehicles. While the company continues to expand its electric vehicle lineup and technology, the case highlights that even basic vehicle components such as headlights remain subject to strict federal safety requirements.
