Nigeria’s digital economy continues to expand as internet adoption and broadband access record further growth across the country. The latest figures from the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) show that internet subscriptions reached 157.4 million in May 2026, highlighting the country’s growing reliance on digital connectivity.
Broadband penetration also climbed to 56.1%, reflecting continued movement toward faster and more accessible internet services. The growth comes as Nigerians increasingly depend on internet connectivity for financial services, education, commerce, remote work, entertainment and communication. Recent NCC-related data also points to continued expansion in broadband subscriptions and the gradual migration toward higher speed technologies.
However, the rising subscription figures do not necessarily mean that every Nigerian has equal access to quality internet. Affordability, network reliability, infrastructure gaps and limited coverage in underserved and rural communities remain important challenges.
For Nigeria, the next phase of digital growth will therefore be about more than increasing subscriber numbers. The country must also ensure that high speed internet is affordable, dependable and available to communities that remain on the margins of the digital economy.
As connectivity becomes increasingly central to economic opportunity, closing Nigeria’s digital divide will be critical to ensuring that the benefits of the country’s expanding digital economy reach a broader population.
