Cabo Verde to Host Africa’s First-Ever Web Summit Event in 2026

Cabo Verde is set to make history after being selected to host the first-ever Web Summit Spotlight event on the African continent in December 2026, a landmark development that further positions the island nation as one of Africa’s emerging digital and innovation hubs.

The announcement marks a major expansion for Web Summit, one of the world’s largest and most influential technology conference platforms known for bringing together startup founders, investors, policymakers, technology executives, and innovators from across the globe.

The event will be hosted in Praia under the Web Summit “Spotlight” format, an initiative designed to connect emerging innovation ecosystems with global technology networks and investment communities. The gathering is expected to attract startups, venture capital firms, global tech companies, entrepreneurs, and digital policymakers from different parts of the world.

Prime Minister Ulisses Correia e Silva described the development as a defining moment for the country’s digital ambitions, noting that the selection reflects growing international confidence in Cabo Verde’s digital transformation strategy and innovation ecosystem.

Also reacting to the announcement, Pedro Lopes said the achievement followed years of work aimed at connecting Cabo Verde to leading global technology ecosystems. According to him, the country’s long-term investment in digital infrastructure and innovation helped pave the way for the milestone.

The decision to host the event in Cabo Verde has drawn attention across Africa’s technology industry, particularly because larger economies such as Nigeria, South Africa, Kenya, and Egypt had often been viewed as more likely destinations for a Web Summit expansion into Africa. Analysts say the choice signals growing recognition of smaller but strategically positioned innovation ecosystems.

The event will be organised in partnership with Parque Tecnológico Arquipélago Digital, also known as TechParkCV, which has become central to Cabo Verde’s ambition of positioning itself as a digital bridge connecting Africa, Europe, and the Americas.

In recent years, Cabo Verde has intensified efforts to build a stronger digital economy through investments in technology parks, startup incubation, coding education, internet connectivity, and digital infrastructure. Government officials have previously stated ambitions for the technology sector to contribute significantly to the country’s GDP by the end of the decade.

Industry observers believe hosting Web Summit Spotlight could significantly increase Cabo Verde’s visibility within the global tech ecosystem while creating new opportunities for African startups seeking international exposure, investment, and partnerships. The event is also expected to strengthen conversations around innovation, digital policy, fintech, entrepreneurship, artificial intelligence, and emerging technologies across Africa.

Founded in 2009, Web Summit has grown from a small technology gathering in Dublin into a global conference brand with events across Europe, the Middle East, Asia, and the Americas. Its expansion into Africa is being viewed as another sign of the continent’s increasing relevance in global technology conversations.

Additional details regarding speakers, attendance figures, startup participation, and the full programme are expected to be announced in the coming months.
