Later on this year 2026, parents will be able to turn off their teen’s access to one on one chats with AI characters entirely, block specific AI characters, and get insights into the topics their teens discuss. This launch begins with Instagram before expanding across Meta’s ecosystem. But Meta isn’t stopping there. The company is expanding AI systems designed to identify underage users and automatically place suspected teens into stricter safety settings across Instagram and Facebook by analyzing account activity, posts, captions, and visual cues. Teen Account protections are expanding to 27 European Union countries and Brazil on Instagram, while introducing the system to Facebook in the US for the first time.
Parents Now have legitimate concerns about what their teens discuss with AI. Meta has implemented PG-13 content guidelines for AI responses, ensuring age-appropriate interactions. The company’s AI is prevented from discussing subjects like self-harm, suicide, eating disorders, and potentially inappropriate romantic conversations with teens. AI-assisted review processes for underage account reports have shown higher accuracy and faster response times in testing than relying on human review alone, adding another layer of oversight.

These parental controls come after the Federal Trade Commission launched an inquiry into several tech companies, including Meta, over how AI chatbots could potentially harm children and teenagers.
