In a dramatic escalation of a long standing ideological feud, Wikipedia has permanently barred its own co founder, Larry Sanger, from editing the platform. The decision, finalized by a consensus of volunteer administrators, concludes a turbulent week of internal debate regarding editorial neutrality, community rules, and the governance of the world’s largest online encyclopedia.
The platform’s decision to hand down an indefinite block the most severe disciplinary action possible against a contributor was not triggered by Sanger’s decades of vocal criticism against the site, but rather by procedural violations. According to internal logs and statements from the Wikimedia Foundation, Sanger was found guilty of “off-wiki canvassing,” a policy that strictly prohibits users from rallying outside audiences to manipulate internal Wikipedia voting and policy discussions.
The friction peaked when Sanger launched an initiative called “WikiProject Intellectual Diversity” (WID). The project was designed to reshape Wikipedia’s editorial ecosystem by actively recruiting editors with conservative, pro Israel, and underrepresented traditional viewpoints, such as those of the Hindu community in India. Sanger has frequently argued that Wikipedia’s mainstream sourcing model which categorizes legacy outlets like the BBC and The New York Times as “generally reliable” while restricting conservative outlets creates an institutional left leaning bias.
However, the ban was officially triggered when Sanger took to the social media platform X to publicize the internal debate over his project to his 93,000 followers, writing:
“Wikipedians are now debating whether my proposed WikiProject Intellectual Diversity should be permitted to become an official WikiProject (club/group of editors). Lots opposed. Also lots in favor.”
Wikipedia administrators ruled that by directing his social media followers to the internal discussion, Sanger was actively trying to stack the vote and skew consensus. The closing note on the internal discussion board concluded that there was a clear consensus to block him, stating:
“There is general agreement among participants that he has engaged in off-wiki canvassing and is not here to constructively build the encyclopedia. There is also a significant concern shared by many editors that his actions constitute calls for outing.”
Wikipedia alongside Jimmy Wales in 2001 and drafted many of its foundational rules before leaving in 2002, fiercely rejected the platform’s decision and the mechanisms behind it. In a public statement, Sanger lambasted the lack of traditional legal safeguards on the site, stating:
“There was no due process, no prosecutor, no dispassionate judge, no jury, no interpretation of law.”
He further criticized the modern editing community as a “kangaroo court” run by a defensive establishment, adding:
“Wikipedia has become more of a mob-rule anarchy than ever. Now that same mob has blocked me for trying to bring an intellectually diverse group of thinkers and editors to the site. Subscribing to their groupthink is now an official requirement for being a member in good standing. Something must change, and now.”
Sanger has long advocated against the anonymity of Wikipedia’s powerful administrators, arguing that a small, opaque group controls the narrative of global knowledge.
In response to the high profile ban, the Wikimedia Foundation maintained its hands off approach to editorial moderation, reiterating that the site is governed entirely by its decentralized community.
“The Wikimedia Foundation does not make editorial or content decisions on Wikipedia,” the organization noted in a statement.
A spokesperson for the foundation emphasized that community guidelines must be enforced neutrally, regardless of a user’s historical status
“These policies apply uniformly to all contributors, regardless of their affiliation or history with Wikipedia.”
With Sanger’s editing privileges formally retracted across the entirety of the platform, the permanent ban seals a bitter irony: the man who coined the name “Wikipedia” and established its first rules is now entirely locked out of its ecosystem.
