Nigeria is set to modernise baggage handling at its airports with the introduction of Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) technology, replacing the traditional barcode based system in an effort to reduce cases of delayed, missing and misrouted luggage.
The Nigeria Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA) announced the planned technology upgrade following growing concerns over baggage management and passenger complaints. The initiative is expected to cover both domestic and international airport terminals across the country.
Michael Achimugu, Director of Public Affairs and Consumer Protection at the NCAA, disclosed the plan at a stakeholder engagement forum in Lagos on August 11, 2026. He said the RFID enabled system would replace the existing barcode framework and give airlines and passengers greater visibility over checked luggage from check in until it reaches the baggage reclaim area.
Unlike conventional barcode tags, which generally require scanners to have a clear line of sight to the printed code, RFID technology uses radio signals to identify and track tagged luggage. This means bags can be detected automatically as they pass through designated points within an airport, creating a more detailed digital record of their movement.
For passengers, the change could significantly improve the experience of dealing with lost or delayed luggage. The NCAA said the system is intended to improve baggage traceability, reduce mishandling and strengthen accountability among the different parties involved in baggage processing.
Baggage problems have remained a major source of frustration for air travellers, particularly when luggage is delayed, sent to the wrong destination or fails to arrive altogether. The new system is expected to provide airlines and airport authorities with more accurate information when investigating such incidents.
The planned rollout also reflects a broader push to modernise Nigeria’s aviation infrastructure through technology. Earlier this year, the Federal Government approved the deployment of a contactless biometric passenger verification system known as V-PASS at domestic airports, aimed at improving security, data integrity and passenger processing.
The RFID initiative could therefore become another important step in Nigeria’s transition toward more automated airport operations. If implemented effectively across the country’s aviation network, it could reduce human error, improve accountability and give passengers greater confidence that their luggage can be traced throughout its journey.
For Nigerian aviation authorities, the ultimate test will be turning the announced plan into a reliable nationwide system that airlines, ground handlers and airports can consistently operate. For passengers, however, the promise is straightforward: fewer lost bags, better tracking and a more transparent journey from the check in counter to the baggage carousel.
