OpenAI has confirmed that every ChatGPT user, including those on the free plan, will soon send unlimited text messages. The announcement, made on Thursday, removes one of the platform’s oldest restrictions and eases a cost that many African users know all too well: the daily message cap on the free tier.
The rollout arrives alongside new GPT-5.6 models. Free and Go users are moving to GPT-5.6 Luna, while Plus and Pro subscribers get GPT-5.6 Sol, a version built for faster research, planning and writing. Free users also get a new “Think” button for deeper reasoning on harder questions. Limits still apply to image generation, file uploads and voice features.
For everyday users, the change solves a real problem. Gbadamosi Emmanuel, a Lagos-based forex trader who uses ChatGPT often, said hitting the message cap used to force him to switch tools mid-task. He would move to another AI model, like Llama, just to finish a conversation he started on ChatGPT. He still finds the image upload limit frustrating, but he says removing the text cap matters more, since most of his usage is text-based anyway. It also means he can avoid paying for a plan he does not fully need.

Oforkaja Francis, a lawyer who relies on ChatGPT for research, described the message limit as his biggest source of friction on the platform. He had been juggling three separate accounts, rotating between them each time he hit his cap. With unlimited text now on the way, he plans to consolidate his work into a single account, a small but meaningful shift for someone whose job is text-heavy.
Their experiences point to a deeper issue that this update does not solve. Over the past year, OpenAI has built a tiered pricing structure aimed at price-sensitive markets. ChatGPT Go launched in Nigeria, Kenya and South Africa at roughly ₦7,000, or about $4.71, a month. Plus now costs Nigerian subscribers around ₦33,800 once the 7.5 percent VAT on digital services is applied. Both Go and Plus users already enjoyed unlimited-style access to GPT-5, image generation and file uploads, features the free tier still restricts.
Unlimited text does not close that gap. It simply narrows the one pain point that pushed users like Francis into multi-account workarounds. For anyone doing image-heavy or file-heavy work, the case for upgrading to Go or Plus remains largely unchanged. Connectivity, electricity and mobile data costs also remain separate hurdles that this update does not touch. In short, unlimited text chats make ChatGPT more usable without fully closing Africa’s access gap.
The update lands as OpenAI, Google, Anthropic, xAI and Meta all compete to widen free access and hold on to users. OpenAI says ChatGPT has now crossed 1 billion monthly users. The company also reports that internal testing found GPT-5.6 Luna cut factual errors by 62 percent compared to the older GPT-5.5 Instant model, while Sol reduced factual errors by 68 percent.
Plus and Pro users can already access the updated Sol model. Free and Go users will get GPT-5.6 Luna this week, with unlimited text chats and the Think button following in the days after.
