The U.S. Space Force has awarded SpaceX a landmark $4.16 billion contract to build a cutting edge satellite constellation designed to track foreign aircraft, drones, and cruise missiles from orbit. The deal serves as a foundational component of President Donald Trump’s ambitious “Golden Dome” initiative a space-based air and missile defense shield aimed at protecting the United States from advanced aerial threats.
The agreement, structured through the Space Force’s Space Systems Command, aims to rapidly accelerate the military’s Space Based Airborne Moving Target Indicator (SB-AMTI) program. SpaceX will field a network of low-Earth orbit satellites acting as a permanent, un jammable radar network in space. This system is designed to eventually phase out vulnerable, aging airborne warning systems like the Air Force’s E-3 Sentry AWACS planes.
Col. Ryan Frazier, the acting Space Force portfolio acquisition executive for Space Based Sensing & Targeting, emphasized the urgency of the mission, “We are beginning development and integration efforts immediately to meet the program’s rapid deployment milestones and address emerging national security requirements.”
The Pentagon has laid out an aggressive timeline, tasking SpaceX with eliminating critical operational blind spots within the next two years.
This initial award is projected to field a constellation of satellites by 2028, providing the Joint Force with an early capability to eliminate operational blind spots,” the Space Force announcement explained.
This multi billion dollar award comes right on the heels of a separate $2.29 billion contract won by SpaceX to build the military’s Space Data Network Backbone the ultra secure, low latency communication layer designed to link orbit sensors directly with interceptor systems.
Together, these contracts establish SpaceX as the primary architect behind the “Golden Dome” infrastructure.
However, defense officials noted they will continue to look for external partners to ensure redundancy in orbit “While this OTA agreement establishes initial SB-AMTI capability, the Space Force anticipates issuing multiple awards in the coming year to drive a vendor-diverse expansion, enhancing capacity and capability for combatant commanders,” the service stated.
With the initial 2028 deadline set, the deal firmly cements SpaceX’s dominant role in America’s nextgeneration national defense strategy.
