Spotify Unlocks Kid-Friendly Managed Accounts for Free Users Globally

Spotify has officially expanded its “Managed Accounts” feature to its free, ad-supported tier, removing the requirement for a paid Premium subscription.

Starting today, parents and guardians in the United States, United Kingdom, Australia, France, Germany, and the Netherlands can set up dedicated, parent-controlled profiles for children under the age of 13 without paying a monthly fee. The streaming giant plans to roll out the free tier option to additional markets including Canada, New Zealand, and other parts of Europe and Latin America in the near future.

Initially launched in late 2024, Managed Accounts were previously locked behind Spotify’s $21.99/month Premium Family plan. By integrating the feature into its free tier, Spotify aims to offer equitable safety tools to all families, regardless of budget.
During a press preview of the launch, Barry Nevin, Spotify’s product lead, highlighted this shift:

“We’re removing the cost barrier to accessing managed accounts, and are really pleased to be opening them up to young listeners around the world. This ensures equitable access for any family who wants to create a Spotify account for their children.”

Under this update, young listeners on the free tier will still hear advertisements. However, Spotify notes that these ads will be tailored to “offer helpful information about how to get the most out of the app” rather than carrying external sales pitches or direct purchase links.

Managed Accounts function as a restricted, “music-only” space. They are specifically designed to give children a platform to discover music and build independent listening habits while stripping away features unsuitable for younger audiences.

Key Parental Controls & Safety Features
Content Filtering: Explicit music is automatically filtered out by default. Parents can also manually block specific songs or artists from playing.

No Videos or Loops: Video content and Canvas looping visuals are completely disabled to keep the focus strictly on audio.

Strict Privacy: The child’s profile is entirely private and unsearchable. It cannot be followed by other users, and all social interactive elements such as direct messaging, “Jam,” and collaborative playlists are deactivated.

Clean Recommendations: Because the child listens through their own isolated profile, their habits will generate independent recommendations (including “Discover Weekly” and “daylists”) without cluttering or skewing their parents’ personalized algorithms.

The setup process is integrated directly into the standard Spotify mobile app.
To get started, parents can open their Spotify app, navigate to Settings and Privacy, and select Parental Controls  (or tap the side menu and select Add Account  Create a Managed Account). The app then guides the adult through verification to confirm parental consent, allowing them to customize content filters before handing the device over to the child.

The expansion comes at a time when technology platforms are facing heightened global regulatory scrutiny regarding children’s online safety. By launching these controls on its free tier, Spotify positions itself as a proactive player, giving families a structured, walled garden for music discovery.
