MTN has pushed back against consumer complaints over rapid data depletion, blaming modern smartphone features and high-speed network defaults rather than billing errors.
According to the telecom giant, the primary culprits behind accelerated consumption are **”hotspot sharing, streaming, and auto-play features.”**
The 5G Factor: Faster 4G and 5G networks load richer, high-definition data packets instantly. An MTN representative clarified: “Data is not taken from you without your action. When you stream, scroll, download, or share, you are using data.”
Background Drains: Social media apps (TikTok, Instagram, Facebook) use predictive algorithms to pre-load videos before you even watch them. Background cloud syncing, mail updates, and app patches also silently drain data.
The Hotspot Trap: Activating a personal hotspot tricks connected laptops and tablets into treating the connection as unlimited WiFi, triggering massive background system updates.
The Solution: Telecom operators urge users to actively manage their data by disabling autoplay, turning off background app refresh, limiting hotspot usage, and lowering video streaming resolution.
