Microsoft has officially turned the clock back to 2001. Capitalizing on a wave of retro tech enthusiasm, the company used its high profile Games Showcase to announce a premium hardware tribute to its gaming legacy: a limited edition, translucent green Xbox Series X console and matching wireless controller.
Officially dubbed the Xbox Series X25 Limited Edition, the hardware is scheduled to hit retail shelves in November, directly anchoring the brand’s 25th anniversary milestones.
The reveal is an explicit nod to the early 2000s aesthetic a period dominated by see through plastic electronics and specifically channels the rare, highly collectible translucent green special editions of the original Xbox hardware. For a generation of players, that distinct hue of green defined the brand’s disruptive entry into a console market previously dominated by Japanese tech giants.
While the internal specifications remain identical to the standard current generation flagship sporting a 1 TB solid state drive and the same high frame rate processing architecture the exterior has been completely reimagined. The sleek, matte black monolith has been swapped for a shell that exposes the inner mechanics of the machine through a smoky, emerald lens.
In an official statement detailing the hardware philosophy, Jason Ronald, Xbox’s Vice President of Next Generation, framed the release as a direct thank you to the ecosystem’s long term community: “For the first time, we’re bringing a translucent design to Xbox Series X, drawing inspiration from the original Xbox and OG Green so many players remember. The Xbox Series X25 Limited Edition respects our history, with the power and performance of the Xbox Series X, including 1 TB of storage, and a design that reflects where we’ve been and the community that’s been with us along the way.”
The physical design integrates several deliberate “Easter eggs” for legacy enthusiasts. When users power the console on, the front-facing “X” logo illuminates in a vibrant green rather than the traditional white light a direct stylistic reference to the original console’s boot sequence.
Additionally, a subtle 25th anniversary insignia is permanently etched onto the front facade.
Accompanying the console is the Xbox Wireless Controller X25 Special Edition. While it will be packaged alongside the limited console bundle in select global markets, Microsoft confirmed it will also be sold as a standalone accessory for players who want a piece of the anniversary without buying an entirely new console.
The controller’s design elements are even more granular in their nostalgic references. The face buttons utilize the original, distinct color scheme for the A, B, X, and Y keys rather than the modernized, monochromatic variants found on standard current gen controllers.
Furthermore, the shoulder bumpers have been stylized to honor the classic “Black and White” auxiliary buttons found on the massive, original 2001 controller affectionately known by players as “The Duke.” Flip the controller over, and the back casing and battery door are completely transparent, showcasing an internal print of the vintage Xbox logo.
The timing of the announcement serves a dual strategic purpose for Microsoft. Beyond celebrating a historical corporate milestone, the release of striking physical hardware injects fresh energy into the current console cycle. Nostalgia has proven to be a highly lucrative lever in consumer electronics, with retro themed peripherals and limited production runs consistently selling out within minutes of pre orders going live.
Microsoft has stated that the console and controller will launch together in “select markets” this coming November. While concrete retail pricing and exact pre order windows have not yet been disclosed, the company indicated that retail specifics would be finalized shortly.
“From the moment you power it on, those details come to life,” Ronald stated, teasing that fans will also “discover a few hidden surprises throughout” the hardware shell when it finally lands in players’ hands later this winter.
