K2 Space has raised $500 million in a Series D funding round, valuing the satellite manufacturer at $6.8 billion as it pushes to build AI-ready 100kW Giga-class satellites designed for the next generation of commercial and government space missions.
The funding comes as demand grows for next-generation satellites capable of supporting AI workloads, advanced communications, defense operations, and Earth observation. K2 Space aims to meet that demand by developing larger, more powerful spacecraft that can deliver significantly greater onboard computing and energy capacity than many satellites operating today.
K2 Space said it has secured more than $1 billion in commercial and government contracts, giving the company a strong order backlog as it expands production of its satellite platforms.
K2 Space Bets on High-Power, AI-Ready Satellites
Unlike many space companies that focus on smaller satellites, K2 Space is developing larger spacecraft capable of carrying heavier payloads and generating significantly more onboard power.
The company plans to introduce its 100kW Giga-class satellite in the second half of 2028. According to K2 Space, the platform is designed to deliver enough onboard power to support advanced communications, AI computing workloads, sensors, and other high-performance payloads for commercial and government missions.
The larger design also allows customers to place more capabilities on a single spacecraft, reducing the need to spread systems across multiple satellites while improving mission flexibility and efficiency.
Funding Supports Expansion
K2 Space said the new capital will help expand manufacturing capacity, accelerate product development, and prepare its next-generation satellites for future launches into orbit.
The investment reflects growing confidence in the commercial space industry as governments and private companies increase spending on satellite infrastructure for AI services, broadband connectivity, national security, climate monitoring, and scientific research.
With more than $1 billion in signed commercial and government contracts, the company enters its next stage of growth with a substantial pipeline of future work.
